Some people have asked me “when did you know…” (that Jonah was autistic.)
To me, I hear the question like this:
“When did you know that Jonah’s thought processes… his interactions with his surroundings… the quintessential things that make him unique…his perception of the wonderful world around him… could also be considered an ‘autistic’ perspective?”
You see all of that “stuff” is part of what makes Jonah who he is.
Who he has ALWAYS been.
I think when Jonah was finally diagnosed at age 3, I finally came to the understanding that “oh… THIS is autism.”
It wasn’t some unknown mysterious “thing.”
It has been a part of our world since he became a part of it.
Even if I didn’t have a “word” for it, I’ve always known that Jonah is someone special.
That’s who he is.
