Jonah’s default sett…

Jonah’s default setting is “happy.”

I don’t just mean “content.”

There is a smile that lives in this kid’s heart.

Every morning when he wakes up, he is looking for ways to be happier.

He is looking for things to laugh about.

When he gets dressed, he puts his clothes on inside out and runs around laughing and yelling and “Inside Out!!” just waiting for us to chase him to fix his clothes.

I’m half convinced this is the only reason he was so eager to learn to dress himself… just to tease Mama and Daddy.

He runs up to Mama when she is getting ready for work and turns the lights out on her, a big grin on his face. He then screams, “LIGHT OUT! Haha haha!”

He has also learned to barge into the bathroom, just to see if you locked the door or not. Because if you didn’t, he will leave it wide open and run away laughing…

Pure joy.

Jonah will ask to go outside in the freezing cold and rain and then giggle uncontrollably when I tell him that it’s “all wet outside.”

But his favorite game currently BY FAR is one he made up called “Daddy’s Key.”

This entails Jonah swiping a spare key (I don’t actually recall what it goes to), and then running away laughing, yelling “Daddy’s Key!” Until I chase him down and it devolves into tickle-time.

Tickle time consists of me tickling Jonah who then yells “ALL DONE [with] TICKLES!” but really just wants more. Because as soon as I stop, he yells “Daddy, get you (me)!”

But many times, Jonah will simply laugh for no particular reason, except because he is happy.

One night, he burst into full on belly-laughing in his sleep at like 2am.

Even his subconscious is happy.

He doesn’t need a reason to be happy. He just IS happy.

He wakes up like every day is the best day of his life, and he doesn’t want to be late for the adventure.

Some days, I really envy him.

Especially on days where it is difficult for me to find things to be happy about.

If only to be able to see each day as a grand adventure.

To remember that there is magic everywhere if we just open our eyes to see it.
