So Jojo has been having trouble understanding the concept of addition at school.

But now that we are stuck at home we are figuring out ways to effectively teach him.

He can understand the concrete concept that “one object and one more object is now two objects…”

…but equating that understanding with the number sentence, “1+1=2” is something that has been difficult for him to grasp.

My sister showed me this little exercise using 2-sided counters (they can be purchased online).

We’ve been working hard on this and I think Jonah is starting to understand the concrete representations of the number of counters corresponding with the number he is writing down, which when put all together becomes a “number sentence.”
