Happy 5th Birthday, Jonah! (video)

5 years old.

I can’t believe it.

5 years ago, we had just begun the journey of parenting multiple kids.

2 years ago today on Jonah’s 3rd birthday, I started a new blog. I would announce to my friends that we suspected Jonah might be autistic (it would be another month before his official diagnosis).

By the time I had the courage to write about it, we had already experienced the gamut of emotions that comes with it, as we had suspected for months.

I had determined not to see “Autism” when I saw Jonah, but to see JONAH for who he already is.

We would take this journey with a little patience, a lot of love, and a ‘Touch of Ausome.’

I can’t believe how far he has come in the last 2 years.

From completely nonverbal, to using 4 and 5-word sentences independently. Sitting in his chair without being strapped in. Eating at restaurants. Haircuts are a breeze! 4-hour trips across the state couldn’t be easier.

I literally CANNOT BELIEVE how far we have come.

I look forward to see where we will be next year….

… when he is six. SIX???!!

sigh

My kid’s birthdays are bittersweet for me. On one hand, we get to celebrate that they are a year older…

On the other hand… “they are a year older.”

Yesterday, I took Jonny to “Disney on Ice.” This is his 5th year going. He’s 10 now. He didn’t cheer quite as much as he did the first time I took him, or even the LAST time I took him. He didn’t yell at all the characters, screaming their name to get their attention. Mickey Mouse isn’t actually “Mickey Mouse” anymore, but just an actor dressed up as Mickey Mouse.

I could see the “magic” of childhood fading in Jonny just a little bit when I compare the same outing from yesterday with previous ones. Jonny is growing up…

And Jonah is 5 today. How can he be 5?

Where does the time go and how can I stop it from leaving? 🙁

I’m so proud of you Jojo.

Happy Birthday, buddy.
