Autism 101:
No amount of “discipline” will bring Jonah back down from sensory overload or a meltdown caused by anxiety.
Without speaking abilities, Jonah’s behavior becomes his most basic expression of communication.
When dealing with “negative behaviors,” we have to first deal directly with the CAUSE of those behaviors, be it anxiety or sensory overload and make every effort to remove it from the equation.
After that, sometimes we just have to stop and wait until the “storm passes.”
Adding consequences to an already escalated situation would only make things MUCH worse.
