One thing I’ve learn…

One thing I’ve learned over the course of our brand of “parenthood” is that when lacking the spoken words or gestures to effectively communicate, a behavioral response is the most direct, effective and tangible means to convey a very specific emotion.

Ive had to learn the difference between malicious intent and communicative outbursts.

Because there IS a difference.

Very seldom are Jonah’s “negative” behaviors a result of malicious intent. In almost every circumstance, Jonah is expressing an emotion he lacks all other avenues to adequately express.

When he knows he is being understood, the behaviors almost always subside.

The key then is to provide him with as many “positive” ways to communicate as possible…

…but even then, sometimes communication breaks down and anxieties take over…

But even in its most basic form, a behavioral reaction is the most fundamental form of communication.

And I will never punish my child for trying to communicate with me.
