“Fair doesn’t always…

“Fair doesn’t always mean equal.”

———

Little brother worked hard on this line of toys and will have a conniption if a single toy is moved.

But Big brother is not happy about this.

You see, Some of these are big brother’s toys. Big Brother doesn’t actually “play” with these toys really anymore …. but it’s the principle of the thing.

Big Brother is upset because little brother doesn’t even ask permission to play with them…

Little brother is pretty much non-verbal and he goes in big brother’s room to gather up these toys without so much as a second thought.

Big brother feels it’s not fair that he always has to be the one who makes accommodations.

Daddy agrees. Because “buddy, life ain’t fair.” But Daddy explains that “fair” doesn’t always mean “equal” and sometimes we have to make allowances for other people. Even if we aren’t happy about it.

It’s okay to not be happy sometimes.

Sometimes little brothers play with your toys without your permission and Mommy and Daddy will ask you to share them instead of telling little brother “no.”

Sometimes this can seem unfair to you, big brother..

Sometimes it feels like you don’t have anything that is only yours.

Life ain’t always fair.

But sometimes, Daddy will go out and buy a brand new toy Just for you.

Not for anyone else. And Not for little brother. And maybe that’s not fair to little brother.

But we love you both equally.

And equal doesn’t always mean fair.
