So it’s that time of year when people are trying to get back to the gym…
I resolve the same thing every year. I set some lofty workout goal in the hopes of improving myself. Sometimes I achieve it. Most times I don’t.
So I set my fitness goals again this year… I think subconsciously my fitness goal is to simply “be able to keep up with my kids for another year.”
But many times, I am simply unable to stay in shape.
“What’s your excuse?…”
I really hate that quote in regards to working out.
When Jonah was younger, he would routinely get kicked out of the child care at our local gym for hitting and pushing other kids…
He used to think it funny when the little ones just learning to walk fell down… and would “assist” them in doin so.
So we had to take a hiatus from the gym. I intermittently go whenever I can.
Sometimes I am able to go early in the morning. In fact, each year, I resolve to do so.
This year is no different.
This morning I went to do just that. I had every intention of waking up at 4am and getting a workout in by 6am and be ready to tackle the day, workout already under my belt.
But I didn’t….
“What’s MY excuse?”
Jonah, taking a hint and not to be outdone has decided to also “not make excuses” and he is up for good…
…since 3:30am.
And he wants Daddy. He creeps into our bed in the middle of the night. Most nights, if he can’t find me, he will wander the house until he does.
It’s difficult to get into a good workout routine. Because if that routine is broken, it becomes MORE difficult to maintain, as you have to “start over” again. It’s hard to get back that motivation.
And that is where I find myself.
At 4am with Jojo on my lap babbling up a storm and snuggling me.
But having to choose between “working out” and “being there for my kids” at 4am isn’t a “choice” at all for me.
“What’s my ‘excuse?’ “
Phaw.
How about “Being a good parent.”
