A friend of mine, who I don’t get to see much told me this the other day. I don’t spend much time with my friends anymore.
But I suppose that is an astute observation about me lately. Every time I look in the mirror lately. Tired eyes. Stressed. Haggard. Perpetually trying to recover from the last “thing” we went through.
Dealing with meltdowns, avoiding them, keeping Jonah from eloping. Keeping constant vigilant watch on him. Juggling the responsibilities of parenting — actually INVESTING in the kids in addition to keeping them fed and clothed — and keeping house and working take a daily toll… Each little thing tends to compile…and when you aren’t getting good sleep…well…
Jonah is a much better sleeper than other autistic individuals, but that does not mean nights are restful He doesn’t sleep in the same place at night. He’ll fall asleep on the floor. I’ll put him in his bed, asleep. I somehow wake up on the floor. He wakes up in our bed. You learn to sleep with an ear subconsciously open listening for him going down the stairs in the middle of the night (which has happened before). And when it’s time to wake up, you ask yourself if you actually slept at all…
And I know a lot of it is just “parenting,” but it gets to you after a while. meh…
I need coffee just thinking about this stuff.
