I’m hesitant to post this, but it’s too important not to.
Talk to your neighbors about your child’s autism and the possibility of eloping.
My worst nightmare about came true today.
Jonah got out of the back yard.
I didn’t notice.
My back yard is completely enclosed and is a safe place for Jojo to play, so I generally let him romp around back there.
Except for a cracked plank in the side gate I’ve been putting off fixing. Jojo had exploited it.
The board was cracked but Jojo was able to kick the board and detach it at the bottom even though the gate is still latched.
Jojo had worked his way through it. It took less than a minute.
I didn’t even notice.
Thank God for neighbors who “get it.”
My next-door neighbor’s adult son is also on the autism spectrum and she saw Jonah in the front yard by himself, just playing in the dirt, a few yards from the roadway.
He could have ran at any time. Earlier today we walked a mile to a local park together.
But he didn’t run this time. And my neighbor made sure he didn’t go anywhere.
She came and got me right away.
It’s such a scary feeling as a parent, but it’s so nice to know our neighbors have our backs in this as well.
Make sure you talk to your neighbors about autism.
