I’ve Lost My Bed

My bed is no-longer my bed.

Every night, I sit with Jonah in his room as he falls asleep. Sometimes this takes a few minutes, other times it can take hours. Usually it involves me laying on the floor while blocking the exit while he climbs in and out of bed, climbs on his desk or dresser, or lays on top of me rolling around “snuggling.”

The other night, after I put Jonah to sleep, I went to climb in bed around midnight and found Jonny already in our bed in my spot. Mama and Jonny were both out cold.

So, not wanting to wake him up, i decided to just sleep on the couch.

About 3AM, Jonah waltzed in from his room and hopped into bed with Jonny and Mama.

He immediately began rolling around doing his “Jojo thing” and kicked Jonny out. Jonny went back to his bed after figuring out that whining wouldn’t make him stop. (We’ve tried this tactic too).

I woke up on the couch to the sound of the coffee-grinder at 5:30am. Apparently Jojo rolled around so much he kicked Mama out of bed too and she just decided to get the coffee going and get the day started.

That’s an average night.

Last night. Jonah finally went down around 11pm so I went downstairs to grab a drink and I heard the “pitter-patter” of 4-year-old feet across the floor upstairs. I knew he had already climbed in bed with Mama. Luckily, Jonny was in his own bed already.

So, not wanting to take another 2 hours putting him back to sleep, I decided again to just sleep on the couch.

Now, when I say “couch,” what I mean is “futon.” And futons are about as comfortable as YOU remember them being, which is to say ‘less than comfortable.’

And then about 7am this morning, Jonah came right downstairs and climbed right into ‘bed’ with me on the couch.

So smug, he was. As if to say, “Gee, Dad, I hope you had a good sleep here on the futon. I had a wonderful night’s sleep up in your bed. In your spot. Next to Mama. I hope you like it down here, because you know that spot upstairs in your nice cozy bedroom on your bed under the covers with 4 pillows on each side? That spot?”

“It’s now MY spot.”
